A. Affirmative Sentences
Past Perfect Tense का प्रयोग सामान्यतः अकेली क्रिया के साथ नहीं होता है । जब भूतकाल ( Past ) में दो कार्य समाप्त हो गए हो तो पहले समाप्त होने वाले कार्य के साथ Past Perfect और बाद में समाप्त होने वाले कार्य के साथ Simple Past का प्रयोग होता है । e.g. मैं गया था ।

1. मेरे स्टेशन पहुंचने से पहले गाड़ी छूट चुकी थी।
- The train had started before I reached the station .
2. मैं अपना काम खत्म करने के बाद उनसे मिला ।
- I met him after I had finished my work .
3. सोने से पहले मैं अपना किताब पढ़ चुका था ।
- I had read my book before I slept .
4. वर्षा होने से पहले हम घर पहुंच चुके थे ।
- We had reached home before it rained.
5. इससे पहले कि मैं कुछ समझ पाता लुटेरा भाग गया था ।
- Before I understood anything the robber had fled .
6. मैंने उसे अपनी कार रोकने से पहले देखा था ।
- I had seen her before she stopped her car .
7. अनु के आने से पहले आरव चला गया था । Aarav had gone before Anu came .
ऐसे वाक्य जिसमें already , before , never , till , Still , since का प्रयोग हो उनके साथ भी Past Perfect Tense का प्रयोग होता है।
1. मैंने पहले भी ताजमहल देखा था ।
- I had seen the Taj Mahal before .
2. मैं यह समाचार पहले ही सुन चुका था ।
- I had already heard this news .
3. मैंने अपना नाश्ता पहले ही ले लिया था ।
- I had already taken my breakfast .
B. Negative Sentences
1. मैंने ऐसा देश पहले कभी नहीं देखा था ।
- I had never seen such a country before .
2. मैंने यह घर पहले नहीं देखा था ।
- I had not seen this house before .
3. मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचने से पहले ट्रेन शुरू नहीं हुई थी ।
- The train had not started before I reached the station .
4. शिक्षक ने परीक्षा शुरू होने से पहले पाठ्यक्रम समाप्त नहीं किया था।
- The teacher had not finished the course before the examination began .
Rule 1. Negative sentences में had के आगे not का प्रयोग करते हैं ।
C. Interrogative Sentences
1. क्या मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचने से पहले ही ट्रेन शुरू हो गई थी ?
- Had the train started before I reached the station ?
2. क्या मेरे स्कूल पहुंचने से पहले शिक्षक नहीं आया था ?
- Had the teacher not come before I reached the school ?
- Or Hadn’t the teacher come before I reached the school ?
3. कितने बच्चे सूर्यास्त से पहले अपने घर पहुँच गए थे ?
- How many children had reached their home before sunset ?
4. वर्षा होने से पहले हम घर क्यों नहीं पहुंच चुके थे ?
- Why had we not reach home before it rained ?
- Or Why hadn’t we reach home before it rained ?
5. मम्मी के बाहर जाने के बाद आपने क्याखाया था ?
- What did you eat after mamma had gone out ?
Rule 1. Interrogative negative sentences में ‘ not ‘ subject के बाद आता है । लेकिन अगर ‘ not ‘ auxiliary verb के साथ contracted हो ( i.e. hadn’t ) तो Contraction ( hadn’t ) Subject के पहले आता है । e.g. ( 2,4)
Rule 2. Interrogative sentences में अगर वाक्य के शुरुआत में ‘ क्या ‘ हो तो Had subject से पहले लगाते हैं और verb की Third Form लगाते है । वाक्य में सबसे पहले ‘ क्या ‘ हो तो ‘क्या ‘ के लिए what नहीं लगाते हैं ।

Rule 3. अगर प्रश्न सूचक शब्द वाक्य के बीच में हो तो अनुवाद करते समय सबसे पहले उनकी अंग्रेजी आती है , फिर had आता है फिर subject और फिर verb की Third Form आती हैं । e.g. ( 4 ,5 )
Rule 4. How many , how much, whose , which के साथ पुणे से संबंधित nouns भी आते हैं । e.g. ( 3 )
Rule 5.वाक्य के अंत में प्रश्नसूचक चिन्ह (?)अवश्य लगाते हैं ।
Past Perfect Tense के प्रयोग – ( Uses of Past Perfect Tense )
1. कभी-कभी Past Perfect Tense के वाक्य के दो भाग नहीं होते हैं परंतु वाक्य से अस्पष्ट होता है कि अभीष्ट कार्य दूसरे कार्य के बहुत पहले ही समाप्त हो चुका था । ऐसे वाक्यों में दूसरा कार्य लुप्त (silent) रहता है । ऐसे वाक्यों में भी Past Perfect Tense का प्रयोग करते हैं । ऐसे वाक्यों में already , before , never , till , Still , since का प्रयोग होता है।
- 1. मैंने पहले भी ताजमहल देखा था ।
I had seen the Taj Mahal before . - 2. मैं यह समाचार पहले ही सुन चुका था ।
I had already heard this news . - 3. मैं बहुत पहले ही सो गया था ।
I had slept much earlier .
